Learn about fire safety open house today (9:17 am)

Firefighting demonstrations, a fire-safety puppet show and other activities for children will be part of an open house now through 2 p.m. today at the El Paso Fire Department Training Academy in Ascarate Park.

The free event is in observance of Fire Prevention Week next week. The puppet show will be at 10 a.m. in the academy's main classroom.

Neighborhood fire stations will also be open to visitors during those hours. Firefighters will be collecting canned food to donate to the West Texas Food Bank and the Salvation Army. .

"September is National Campus Fire Safety Month," said Daniel O'Brien, health and safety specialist and fire prevention manager at ETSU.
"I fell asleep with a candle on and when it burned down all the discarded matches inside there lit on fire and set off the smoke alarm," Kralik said. "When I woke up I had no idea what was going on. I saw the flames coming from the candle and I just grabbed it to put it out."
He spent the next hour running cold water over his hands with little relief before his roommate decided to take him to the emergency room, where he was treated for second-degree burns on eight of his fingers. "For three or four months I didn't even have fingerprints," Kralik said.
Not all off-campus fires are put out in time, however. According to the Center for Campus Fire Safety in Belchertown, Mass., 89 students have died nationally in off-campus fires since January 2000.

While some daily appointments include building inspections or informational presentations, there's no telling when a destructive fire will send his whole schedule right out the window.Brown began his career by taking an Emergency Medical Services class in 1984. He was a firefighter with the Clinton Fire Department for 13 years before he became the city's fire marshal in 2000. Today, he spends most of his time educating the public about preventing fires and inspecting new and existing buildings throughout the city to make sure occupants will have a fighting chance of getting out safely during a fire."My most important duty is fire prevention," Brown said.Another big part of Brown's duties includes reviewing construction plans for new buildings and making sure everything required for fire code compliance is in place.

Fall brings seasonal fun

This year's theme is "Prevent Cooking Fires: Watch What You Heat," and is geared to teach families and kids how to keep cooking fires from starting in the first place. The day's activities will include a Fire Safety Smoke House, Internet safety, Jumpers, 911 emergency call simulator, children fingerprinting, balloons, blood pressure checks, car seat safety, home safety, hot dogs, popcorn, drinks, memory pictures and a state fire marshal vehicle. Rutherford County Historical Society hosts tour of "Old Jefferson, 2 to 6 p.m. President of the group, Toby Francis, will lead a tour of "old Jefferson," the original Rutherford County seat. The walk will take about 40 minutes, with several historical stops along the way.

College fire safety issues to be addressed during Fire Prevention ...

Fire safety never seems to be important until it is needed in a real situation. During Fire Prevention Week Oct. 8 to Oct. 14, UDs Environmental Health and Safety and Risk Management Department, along with the Dayton Fire Department, will host several events on campus to stress its importance, especially among college students. The theme for Fire Prevention Week 2006 focuses on cooking, the leading cause of home fires and injuries.

According to Sharon Gavlick, assistant environmental safety administrator of the Environmental Health and Safety and Risk Management Department, it is important to get students involved in these events to help stop fires in the future. The Dayton Fire Department will simulate conditions of a live fire Oct. 11 at 7 p.m. and will assist participants in escaping from a home.

New trailer will help teach fire safety

Boonville students will get a better opportunity to put their education to the test next week as they learn about fire prevention and safety, thanks to a grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.Boonville Fire Department received a fire prevention grant in 2005 to help fund the purchase of a Fire Safety House, a portable classroom that allows students to learn about safe kitchen practices and to try out their escape techniques. The educational “house" offers two televisions for showing videos both inside and outside of the facility, bleachers for small groups in the kitchen area, and a ladder outside of the bedroom window to allow for a safe “escape." The Fire Safety House is also capable of simulating smoke in the bedroom and heating the door knob and door to let children experience what it might be like during a fire.In past years, said firefighter Scott Watson, the department would have some of the older kids come to the Survive Alive House at the Vanderburgh County 4-H Fairgrounds.

BFD urges fire safety

Thick, grey, acrid smoke can fill the lungs of a human in moments, causing severe illness that could lead to death.

The Brewton Fire Department is doing its part in helping to prevent such tragedies with a special focus during Fire Prevention Week today through Saturday.

“We are planning events throughout the week to help educate the public on fire safety," said Lawrence Weaver, Brewton fire chief. “We are planning an open house on Tuesday to remind people about proper use of fire and ways to prevent fires in their homes."

The open house will be held at the Brewton Fire Department on St. Nicholas Avenue from 3:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday. During the afternoon event, firefighters will be available for discussion of fire prevention as well as to give tips to children on how to escape a fire.

College Education: Fire Safety For Students

In recognition of Fire Prevention Week and in light of a Greater Alarm Fire that occured this morning in a former frat house near the UCLA Campus in Westwood, the men and women of the Los Angeles Fire Department are asking you to join them in a quest for campus fire safety. More than 10.2 million young adults ages 18 to 24 head to college each fall, leaving parents to wonder about the issues their children will face - crime, academic pressure and social activities that may involve alcohol. Parents often overlook a problem that strikes college towns each and every year: fire.Since January 2000, 88 people have died in on- and off-campus-related fires. Nearly 80 percent of these fatal fires occurred in off-campus housing, where most students live.Though the fire this morning in Westwood remains under investigation, a common factor in fires involving college students is alcohol consumption, which may limit response to traditional smoke alarms.
